I found her characterization quite equal between the book and the show, as in both she’s quite an easy character to read. Her strength and stubbornness is at the center of every scene she’s in, and I loved spending more time with her. We’re very clear about this world and that this is not a history lesson. It’s very important to me that people understand that, because I’m telling the story of Queen Charlotte of Bridgerton, not of Queen Charlotte of England. In the book, however, George's voice is present from the beginning, with many chapters written from his point of view. We learn more about exactly how his family story unfolded, including his father's untimely death (hence why his mother, Augusta, is a princess, not a queen), his terrible grandfather, and more. We also, heartbreakingly, get inside his tormented mind and heart from the very beginning, giving more insights into the lengths he will go to in order to "cure" himself of his illness. For example, the super-popular White Lotus was initially going to be a limited series, but it became an anthology show because it was such a big hit. Another difference between the TV version and the book is in particular one scene – near the end when George and Charlotte spot Reynolds and Brimsley dancing together – in the show the royal couple don’t notice them. But in the book, they look over and are happy for the pair. George suffered his first major bout of mental illness in 1788.
If you want to zoom out and put Queen Charlotte in greater context, you can't go wrong with Tracy Borman's history of the British monarchy, Crown & Sceptre. Particularly of interest for Charlotte fans would be Part 6, on the Hanoverians. After Bridgerton initially premiered, there was a spike in interest in the real Queen Charlotte.
